Menstrual flow and foods
Periods are the most dreaded time of the month and irregular blood flow makes them even worse. Stress, wrong diet and an unhealthy lifestyle is the reason behind almost 33 percent of Indian women, suffering from scanty or irregular periods. For a proper blood flow, one needs to start eating healthy and also bring a change in their stagnant lifestyle. Being physically fit and active can start proper blood circulation throughout the body, which can lead to a normal heavy flow during periods. Here is a list of food that can help induce normal menstrual flow.
As the old folks in the house suggest, eating heat inducing food can increase blood flow. Jaggery is one such item that will surely increase the blood flow because of the high iron content in it. To have a proper flow during periods, mix jaggery with some ginger, sesame seeds, a bit of haldi, some jeera and gulp or chew it down with a cup of warm water. Start doing this two- three days prior to the cycle date to avoid scanty blood flow.
Turmeric acts as a great natural home remedy that can increase blood flow. Mixing it with warm milk and having haldi doodh or the trending ‘turmeric latte’ can regulate the flow and balance hormones due to the warming effect it has inside the stomach. The antispasmodic effect of haldi can also give you relief from period cramps. These antispasmodic effects also expand and stimulate the uterus for a heavy menstrual flow.
Papaya is another heat inducing food that can stimulate the uterus for a good period flow. One should eat papayas in moderation though, as its heat can cause stomach upsets. The fruit contracts the uterus muscle fibres to regulate the menstrual flow. The rich carotene content in papayas can help induce the period or even prepone it. Having it a day before the estimated date can help in keeping irregular periods at bay. Eating it when the fruit is not ripe yet can have better effects on the body than that of a ripe papaya.
Bromelain, an enzyme found in pineapples can shed the lining of the uterus walls, which induces the menstrual cycle. This enzyme also relaxes the muscles, and having pineapples during periods can help in calming down menstrual cramps. Pineapple also has a good amount of manganese content, which helps in increasing blood flow during periods. Sipping down pineapple juice throughout your period days can help one survive them a bit better.
Chocolates are the best friend during these painful days. The high magnesium content in chocolates helps in proper functioning of the uterus. This vitamin rich food has plenty of minerals like copper, protein and is also rich in iron which helps in inducing menstruation.
